World Class Brown Trout
THE LENGTH OF STAY
Owen River Lodge will accommodate any length of stay you wish! (Two night minimum stay) Typically we recommend a seven night/six day trip. Non-anglers are absolutely catered.
Owen River Lodge is New Zealand’s only 5 star rated specialist fly fishing lodge. The lodge is located south of Nelson which is the top of the South Island of New Zealand.
The lodge sits on the bank of the Owen River, providing our guests with views which are simply breath-taking, with sensational views of the Owen River, Kahurangi national park and Mount Owen. To ensure your absolute privacy, guests are accommodated in one of six guest cottage suites which are located in the gardens, a short stroll from the main lodge. Each cottage guest suite can be configured with either a King double bed or 2 x King single beds; they are luxuriously appointed with individual reverse cycle air conditioning; king sized beds, original fine New Zealand art works and feature 100 year old recycled oregon beams and woodwork. One of the highlights of your stay at Owen River Lodge will be the meals. New Zealand's unique cuisine has grown from a fusion of highly distinct cultures - Māori, Polynesian, Asian and every kind of European. The food at Owen River Lodge could best be described as stunning. We use the best of fresh, locally sourced produce and wines. Naturally the tariff includes all meals and non- alcoholic beverages.
Over the years, New Zealand has developed a reputation for having the best sighted river fishing for trout in the world.
You may have heard New Zealand's rivers described as being "Gin Clear" - well it's true! The lodge is centrally located, with easy access to the Nelson and West Coast Fisheries. Thus you can enjoy fly fishing on numerous blue-ribbon streams and rivers, with over 30 waters accessible by road (most within 1 hours drive) and countless others by helicopter.
The region is renowned as a "sighted" brown trout fishery, with the average trout size ranging from 3lb to 6lb (there's nothing average about that!). This means, for the majority of the rivers, the angler must see the fish, before the fish sees you. Hunting or stalking our brown trout requires the angler to use a dull colored fly line, long leaders & fine tippet. Unlike lake fishing, the majority of the casting you will do will be medium to short distances - accuracy being much more important than the ability to cast the complete fly line. Generally anglers use a 5 or 6 weight rod, 9 to 10 feet in length.
