Mid May to October
Rainbow & BrownTrout
THE LENGTH OF STAY
One, two & three day float trips are standard. Prices are based on double occupancy and one guide per raft. Trip maximum of 12-people. (Eight-anglers , four-guides in four-boats.)
During the float, the accommodations are tent camping due to the limited access to the river. However, at the beginning and end of your float trip, the fishing lodge and cabins are available and highly recommended. Lodge and Cabins are setup to comfortably feed, house and entertain guests before and after their fishing adventure. During your stay at the lodge guests are invited to fish three miles of private water on the Gunnison River, as well as several stocked ponds on the property. The lodge only serves breakfast and dinner (applicable fees). Arriving early to the lodge allows some time for the guests to meet their guides, pack their river bags, stop by the fly shop, and relax around the fire circle. Guests arriving mid-day should make arrangements to eat before coming to the property or bring a picnic lunch. Camping is conducted at designated camping sites along the river.
The Gunnison Gorge is unique as there is no road access to the river. Transportation is provided over a rough road by 4x4 to the rim of the canyon. From there everyone hikes the moderate 1.2 mile Chukar Trail to the river while carrying their personal gear on the their backs. Guests wishing to avoid this may prearrange to have their gear taken in by horse for an additional fee. Once at the river, you meet the boats and equipment, which have been packed in by horse the day before. Several Class III and Class II rapids need to be negotiated during this 14 mile stretch of river. Black Canyon Anglers is one of the only lodges to offer both fantastic Brown Trout, and Rainbow Trout fishing and exciting whitewater in the same trip! Majority of the fishing is done wading on the multi-day trips; on the single day trips fishing from the raft is necessary to cover the mileage. All rafting equipment, life jackets, food, kitchen gear and tents are provided. Guests are responsible for their own fishing license, rods, reels & flies (or rentals, sleeping bag, pad & personal items.) Catch and release principles are practiced.
